Am I working towards my goal, or just around it?

Q: Am I truly working towards my goal — or just keeping myself busy around it?

A: Sometimes it takes looking at someone else’s story to finally see what’s been happening in your own.

I once lived next door to a violinist who practiced scales and warm-up exercises every single morning for 45 minutes. Every. Single. Day. Without fail. I was impressed, and even a little intimidated… at first.

Then I noticed that the TV was usually on at the same time. Coffee was being sipped. The concentration just wasn’t there.

Over several years, that violinist practiced thousands of hours of warm-ups. And their playing never really improved. The same notes stayed out of tune. They never won an audition. Never got the orchestra job they said they wanted so badly.

It wasn’t a lack of effort. It was a lack of honest alignment between the goal and the actions.

Sound familiar? It’s one of the most common — and most painful — things to see in ourselves. And it’s exactly the kind of thing that my Motivation module (link here) is designed to help you spot.
