A: It might not be you. It might be your environment.
If you’ve ever noticed that the exact same task can feel exciting in one situation and completely daunting in another, congratulations, you’re normal!
Your environment and the level of pressure it carries have more to do with your motivation than you might think.
Think about singing. In the shower, we might belt out a tune without a second thought. At a karaoke party, some people feel completely at ease and others feel terrified. On a concert stage in front of a thousand people—that’s a high-demand environment no matter who you are.
Same task. Different environments. Very different motivation.
Our lives are full of high-demand, medium-demand, and low-demand environments. Each environment affects our motivation differently. Once you know which type of environment you’re operating in, you can start to figure out how to adjust your motivation to match it.
